Easy listening too, while you browse the web or wish to relax and search through our file servers. If you think we are shy in your favorite genre, let us know. What can I do at the Music Bulletin Board?

Talk to the community, nicely, politely, with class. Talk to "Melanie". She's the moderator. What do you like? Where is the music industry going? Do you have any advice? Are you looking for some information? Do you have some to share? If you are a musician and you have some concerts or other events to promote or some new releases to promote, tell everyone. Do you have a web site? Please mention the doman name. Watch out for the anti-spam filters! Just enter the fully qualified domain name like in this example: "We believe we are the greatest Hip Hop group in the Albany area. Our website is at greatest-hip-hop-group.com and we'd love to have you visit us." Whatever. But don't SPAM the Bulletin Board. Add your URL to SpiderMonkey instead..

What is an "MP3" file?

Most of our music (audio) files are in the ubiquitous MP3 format. MPEG Audio Layer-3, popularly referred to as MP3 is an audio compression file format. The format employs an algorithm that compresses the music file, achieving significant data reduction while retaining "near" CD-quality sound. A three-minute song that would require about 32 megabytes of disk space in its original form can be compressed utilizing MP3 technology into a file of about 3 megs without a significant reduction in sound quality.

What is a ".wmv" or ".avi" file?

That's your basic music video these days. AVI files are Audio Video Interleave Files viewable with ©QuickTime and ©RealPlayer as well as Microsoft players. WMA files are WIndows Media (Audio) videos. Those things will almost play on your Mom's sewing machine, they are becoming so prolific. Windows Media Video files are compressed and play well with Windows Media Player (NT), Windows Media Player 7, Windows Media Player for Windows XP, and Windows Media Player 9 Series. Other players will handle these files as well.

What is a ".wma" file?

Many of our MP3 music files are replicated in the WMA format. Windows Media Audio files are also best played on the Microsoft Windows Media player. If you would like more information you can visit "Windows Media 9 Series" at Microsoft. Windows Media Audio (.wma) files are Advanced Systems Format (.asf) files that include audio that is compressed with the Windows Media Audio (WMA) codec. By using a separate extension, users can install multiple players on their computer and associate certain players with the .wma extension for playback of audio-only sources.

What should I search for?

Music, by artist name or title. But use what you can spell correctly. If you know the song title or are certain you can spell the artist's name, go for it. You don't even need to use the whole word; just type as much as you know for sure like "Belefon" if you can't remember how to spell Harry Belafonte. If you are looking for "Clocks" by "Cold Play", type "clocks". Are you searching for songs by Clay Aiken? Type "aiken". He hasn't released many at the time of writing, so you won't be swamped with responses, but if you are looking for "The Way You Move" by Outkast you would find it more quickly by searching with the string "the way you move". If you are searching for "Anything but Ordinary" by Avril Lavigne, try first typing the song title "anything but ordinary". If you type Avril Lavigne you will get pages of results and what you seek may not be on the first page of song titles. The same applies to the Beastie Boys, the Beatles, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Justin Timberlake, Michelle Branch, Moody Blues, Nappy Roots, Neil Diamond, No Doubt, Outkast, Oasis, Santana, U2 and so on...

What is the best way to search for music to download?

Fewer words. This page is not a Boolean search resource. If you can't find what you are looking for you can use the Boolean search feature at SpiderMonkey which will also search our download file servers.

What if I don't find the song I am looking for?

First, check your spelling. We have a Music Research Database to help you with your spelling and matching album names, song titles and artists. Our search feature at www.mobrienMusic.com is a Boolean version which means you can include some filters such as "and", "or", "not" or parenthsized phrases to assist your search. For example, you could type "Justin Timberlake not Black" which would produce results for any songs done by "Justin Timberlake" without collaboration with "Black-Eyed Peas" (or any other "Black" for that matter). Another way to do this is to type "Justin Timberlake -Black". There's a minus sign in front of "Black" without a space. If you leave a space the search will ignore it. If you changed the minus sign to a plus sign, only results for Justin Timberlake collaborating with "Black" would appear. Use a minus sign to ignore results which include that word and use a plus sign to force inclusion of that word. Boolean search is just a click away from here. Try it.

How much does it cost me to download music?

We created an annual membership ($34.95 USD). We aimed for a customer-friendly price package based on analysis of years of MP3 downloads. The average number of downloads makes us the lowest price option for most of our members.

Why do I have to pay for downloaded music now -- I didn't previously?

Many people still arrive here wanting to "download free music to my computer". Guess what? MP3s were never free. Someone always paid. We pay large for bandwidth, equipment, power, premises, programmers and engineers. The artist worked to create the music. They deserve some pay. The studios worked to mix down and produce the music. They deserve some pay. Then there's the agents, promoters and lawyers. Well, we can muse quietly about what pay they deserve.

What can I do with the music I download?

Play it. Enjoy it to your heart's content. You and the members of your household are entitled to private enjoyment of your music in any manner of your choosing. That would include portable devices or playing it right from your computer. It would also include burning a CD and playing it on the family stereo. What you may not do is share these files on your computer with the internet community. You may not "upload" these files to anyone. They are yours and only yours. Tell your friends to get their own.

Why am I finding duplicates for some songs?

They are likely not the same. Check for a different file size and format. Choose which is best for your needs. Be sure you know if you are getting a video or audio file. Video files can take a long time to download and not every computer can play every format. Among both the WMA and MP3 file formats there are as many as ten different compression and quality rates. Where possible, we include some options for the more popular songs. The higher the file size and the greater the KBS rate, the more muscle you need in your computer and sound system, but it's a nicer sound. If you are using an older computer, download the file with the lowest bit rate. 96 KBS is a standard, high quality bit rate for most modern computers but some older machines can't handle that. If you do not have an extravagant computer sound system, the best policy for you is to download the smallest file size when you have the choice. It requires a substantial multi-media computer setup to realize the benefits of higher digital quality so you are going to benefit in your pocket (bandwidth costs on your monthly ISP bill) if you download only the MP3 and WMA files which are appropriate to the sophistication level of your computer / multimedia setup. If you are a computer audiophile, you will certainly know which choice to make when confronting the options.

What do I do if I find a song I wish to download?

Let's say you searched for "Where is the love" and then among the first few titles in your results is the heading, "Black Eyed Peas Featuring Justin Timberlake: Where is the Love". Place your mouse pointer over the word "Download" which will be below and to the right of the title, or you can select the song title itself and Left Click either. You will then be asked for your username and password which were assigned to you when you registered. Once you have entered these correctly, we suggest you select "remember my password". Next you will see a download page with the file name of the title you wish to download. This is where you need to think about where you want to store your new music. (So you can find and play it later.) In short, don't forget where you saved the file. So once you have that in mind, Right Click the title this time and select "save target...". If first party cookies are not enabled on your browser, you will be asked again to enter your username and password. Be sure to select "remember my password" so you won't have to do this again. Next a window will open to your computer for you to select the location for storing your music. Again, save the file in a place where you have drive space remaining and won't forget it later. :o)

Why do I sometimes need to log in again?

A number of reasons; primarily security. We don't want malicious users poisoning files you would soon download so we don't allow them access. Your downloading experience crosses over many different servers and subnets as you search for your music, MP3s, WMA's, WMV's and AVI's.. To keep track of you we use session-state authentication cookies. If your computer is not configured to accept those first-party cookies, your session ID will be lost after about five minutes. You will then be asked to log in again the next time you navigate across a router to another subnet and download server in our system. You won't likely know when that is happening -- it's an automation that moves you to the least busy servers in a cyber-world where music lovers are coming and going in the thousands every minute. Select "save my password". That will help.

Important notice to parents about music content.

Whereas there is a trend within the music industry to back away from prolific profanity and seditious comment in musical lyric content, we strongly suggest parents nevertheless monitor and discuss with their children any controversial music they entertain themselves with. We do not provide any assurances about the moral content of any artist's creation, and in fact are inclined to advise parents that a thorough education in the use of extreme profanity can be obtained from some musician's body of work. Please be wary of your children's preferences in music content and administer whatever censorship you see fit within your own domain. We are prepared to assist parents in this regard by any reasonable measure available too us. Contact us.
